Genesis 41:1-40 Pharaoh's Dreams

 Genesis 41:1-40 Pharaoh's Dreams

Read Genesis 41:1-40 Here

Joseph was in prison when Pharaoh had a dream.  7 sleek and fat cows come out of the Nile.  Next 7 ugly and skinny cows come out of the Nile.  The skinny cows ate the fat cows.

Pharaoh had a second dream in this dream: 7 healthy and good heads of wheat grown on a stalk.  Next 7 thin and scorched by the east wind grow.  The thin ones ate up the healthy ones.  He woke up and realized it was  a dream.

The next morning Pharaoh sent for all of the magicians and wise men.  He told of his dreams but none of them could explain it.  Then the Chief Cupbearer told the Pharaoh about Joseph and how he interpreted his dream and the dream of the Chief Baker.

Pharaoh had Joseph brought to him.  Joseph was shaved and had his clothing changed before he came before the Pharaoh.

Joseph told Pharaoh that God would be the one that would give the interpreting of the dream.  Pharaoh told of his dreams.  Joseph said that the 7 cows and grains are 7 years.  There is to be 7 years of abundance in Egypt followed by 7 years of famine.  The reason that God gave him 2 dreams is because it is going to happen and it would happen very soon.  Joseph also told him what he should do to help with the famine to come.  Joseph told him to put someone in charge and collect 5th of the harvest during the 7 years of abundance.  Then they will have food for the 7 years of famine.  The Pharaoh and his officials like the plan.  Pharaoh then put Joseph in charge of the palace.  Only Pharaoh was to be higher than Joseph.

Genesis 40:1-23 The Cupbearer and the Baker

Genesis 40:1-23 The Cupbearer and the Baker

Pharaoh had a cupbearer and a baker that he became angry with, he put them in the same prison as Joseph.  Because Joseph was the the attended at the prison he was for them as well.  The cupbearer and the baker both had dreams on the same night.  They were both upset because there was no one to interpret the dream.  Joseph told them to tell him the dream and the Lord would help him interpret the dreams.

First the chief cupbearer told of his dream.  In the dream there was a vine with 3 branches that bloomed and it turned into grapes.  The cupbearer took a cup and squeezed the grapes into the cup.  He then gave the cup to Pharaoh. Joseph told the interpreting to be that he would be restored in 3 day to his old position.  Joseph asked the cupbearer to remember him and get him out of prison.

Next the baker told of his dream.  He saw that the other interpretation was good so he told Joseph of his dream.  He had 3 baskets on his head. In the baskets were baked goods for Pharaoh but birds came and ate the baked goods in the baskets.  Joseph told him that the dream meant, the 3 baskets were 3 days.  Within 3 days Pharaoh will come and you will be hung from a tree and birds will come and eat off your skins.

Three days later was Pharaoh's birthday and he had a special dinner for all of his officials.  During the meal he restored the cupbearer and hung the baker just as Joseph had said.  The chief cupbearer forgot about Joseph..

Genesis 39:1-23 Joseph and Potiphar's Wife

Genesis 39:1-23 Joseph and Potiphar's Wife

Potiphar was an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, specifically the captain of the guard.  Potiphar bought Joseph from the Ishmaelites. Joseph prospered because the Lord was with him.  Joseph became Potiphar’s attendant; he was in charge of all of Potiphar’s household and everything he owned, for he saw that he had favor of the Lord and that everything he did prospered. From the moment that Joseph was put in charge the Lord blessed the Potiphar household and everything he owned.

Genesis 39:6

So he left in Joseph’s care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,

Potiphar’s wife noticed Joseph and tried to get him to go to bed with her.  Joseph was a man of honor and would not do it.  He knew that if he did it he would be sinning against God.  She persisted and tried to get him to sleep with her day after day.

Genesis 39:11-12

One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

So she made a story up that he had pushed himself on her when she screamed he left his cloak and ran.  When her master returned he told her the same story.  Potiphar was so angry and put Joseph in prison.   But even in prison the Lord was with Joseph.  Joseph found favor in the eyes of the warden.  The warden put him in charge of the prison.

Genesis 39:23

The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

Genesis 38:1-30 Judah and Tamar

 Genesis 38:1-30 Judah and Tamar

Judah married Shua who gave birth to Er, Onan, Shelah.

Er married Tamar.  God took Er’s life because he was wicked. Judah told Onan it was his job to have children with Tamar for his brother's sake.  He did not want to have children that would not be his so he made sure this did not happen. What Onan did was wicked in the sight of the Lord so he also took Onan's life.  Judah told Tamar to live in his house until Shelah was grown.

Much later Judah’s wife Shua died.  Judah went up to shear his sheep.  Tamar heard of this so she disguised herself so Judah would not know that it was her.  She was not happy because Shelah had grown up but Judah had not given him to her as a wife.  Judah show Tamar and thought she was a prostitution.  Judah went up to and said he wanted to sleep with her.  She asked what he would give her to sheep with him.  He told her he would give her a goat.  She asked for something now as a promise for the payment.  Judah asked what she wanted.  Your seal and its cord, and your staff was what she asked for.  Judah gave them to her.  Tamar became pregnant by Judah.

Judah gave the goat to Adullamite to give to the prostitution.  He could not find her and no one knew who she was so Adullamite brought the goat back to Judah.

After 3 month had gone by Judah heard that Tamar was pregnant.  They said that she was guilty of prostitution and now was pregnant.  Judah was angry and said to bring her out and burn her.  Tamar send a message to Judah and said I have become pregnant by the man who owns these things.  She asked if he recognized whose seal and cord and staff these are.  Judah knew it was his. His knew right away what he had done.

Tamar had twins, the first one ended up being the second one out:

Genesis 38:27-30

When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.” But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez. Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out and he was given the name Zerah.

Genesis 37:12-36 Joseph Sold by His Brothers

Genesis 37:12-36 Joseph Sold by His Brothers

Joseph's brothers were watching their flock near Shechem when Israel told Joseph to go see his brothers and bring word back to him.  When Joseph got to Shechem his brothers were not there, they had moved on to Dothan.  As Joseph was approaching his brothers were plotting on how to kill him.

Genesis 37:19-20

“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

The oldest brother did not want to kill Joseph.  Reuben suggested that they just put him in the cistern, he planned to come back later and rescue him.  When Joseph reached them they took his coat and threw him in the cistern.

After this they sat down to eat their lunch.  As they were eating they saw a caravan coming by.  The caravan had spices, balms and myrrh and was on its way to Egypt.  Judah suggested that they sell Joseph instead of killing him.  They sold him for 20 shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites that were on their way to Egypt.  When Reuben returned he did not see Joseph in the cistern so he tore his clothes and was upset because Joseph was gone.

The brothers took Joseph’s coat and dipped it in goats blood so that they could take it back to their father.  They told their father that the found the coat on their way back.  Jacob assumed that an animal had attached Joseph and killed him.  Jacob was very sad about his son.

Genesis 37:34-35

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “in mourning will I go down to the grave to my son.” So his father wept for him.

Genesis 37:1-11 Joseph's Dreams

 Genesis 37:1-11 Joseph's Dreams

Read Genesis 37:1-11 here

Joseph was 17 and was watching the flock with his brothers. When he returned to Jacob he gave a bad report about his brothers. Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph the most of his sons and he made him a coat of many colors. His brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than any of the other brothers.

One day Joseph told his brothers about a dream that made them hate him even more. In the dream Joseph saw them binding sheaves of grain out in a field when all of the sudden Joseph sheaf rose and stood upright while theirs gathered around and bowed down around his sheaf. This made the brothers mad and asked him if he thought he was going to reign over them.

Joseph had another dream. This time he told of the dream when his dad was there. In this dream the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to him. His father rebuked him.

Genesis 37:10-11

When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Dinah the daughter of Leah was raped by a Hivite named Shechem. Dinah brothers were very angry about what had happened.  Hamor the father of Shechem said to Jacob my son has his heart set on your daughter. He wanted Jacob to give Dinah to his son to marry. Shechem said that he would pay any price for her to be his bride. The brothers told them that all of the males would have to be circumcised. If they did this they would take their daughter to be their wives. If they would not than they would take Dinah and leave.

Shechem and Hamor were ok with the agreement. They went back to the men of the city and told of the plan. So every male agreed and were circumcised.
