Genesis 4 - Cain and Abel

Genesis 4 - Cain and Abel

Cain was the oldest

Abel was the youngest

Abel kept flocks

Cain worked the soil

Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.

Abel brought fat portions from the firstborn of his flock.

The Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he was not pleased. Cain was very angry.

God knew that Cain knew what he did was not right.

Cain invited his brother to the field and killed him there.

The Lord asked Cain where his brother was, of course God knew what Cain had done. Cain lied and said he had no idea where he was, but God knew better. God knew his heart when you gave Him his offering and he knew what he had done. Nothing can be hidden from God no matter how we try.

Cain's punishment was that his work would no longer yield him crops and that he would wander the rest of his life. Cain was worried about being killed.  The Lord said that he would protect him.  God gave him a mark so that if anyone found him they would not kill him.

Cain married and had a son named Enoch. Cain built a city and named it after Enoch. Enoch a son named Irad.  Irad had a son named Mehujael.  Mehujael had a son named Methushael.  Methushael had a son named Lamech.

Lamech was the first man mentioned in the Bible to have two wives, Adah and Zillah. One of Adah’s sons was the father of those who lived in tents and raised livestock, his name was Jabal.  Another of Adah’s sons Jubal was the father of all who played harps and flutes.  Zillah had a son named Tubal-Cain, he made tools from bronze and iron.  Zillah as had a daughter Naamah which is the first daughter named.

Adam also had another son named Seth.  Seth had a son named Enosh.

The last verse of this chapter says that this is when men started to call on the name of the LORD.
