Exodus 35:1-3 Sabbath Regulations

 Exodus 35:1-3 Sabbath Regulations

Moses made sure all of the Isrealites were reminded that for 6 days they were to work but on the 7th it was to be holy.  If anyone works on this day he should be put to death.  There was not even to be a fire in their dwelling on the Sabbath day.

Exodus 34:29-35 The Radiant Face of Moses

Exodus 34:29-35  The Radiant Face of Moses

Moses comes down from the mountain with the two tablets and an extra slow to his face.  When Aaron and the other leaders saw him they were afraid of him.  Moses called to them and they came to him.  Moses told them everything the  Lord had commanded.  After this Moses put a veil on his face.  When he would talk to the Lord he would take off the veil.

Exodus 34:1- 28 The New Stone Tablets

Exodus 34:1- 28 The New Stone Tablets

The next day Moses was to go back up on Mount Sinai.  He was to come alone and to have new tables that he was to make to replace the ones that he broke.  He did as God told him.  When he was on the mountain he stood with the Lord.

Exodus 34:6-7

And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.”

Moses bowed down and worshiped the Lord and once again asked him to go with them.  God told him that he would and said that he would do amazing things not seen before among them.  God told Moses he would drive out:

  1. Amorites

  2. Canaanites

  3. Hitites

  4. Perizzites

  5. Hivites

  6. Jebusites

God also told them to not make a treaty with them because they will be a snare among them.  They were to:

  1. Not make a treaty

  2. Break down their altars

  3. Smash their sacred stones

  4. Cut down their Asherah poles

  5. Don’t worship their gods

  6. Don’t marry them

  7. Don’t make cast idols

The Lord told the Israelites to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread.  For seven days eat bread that is made without yeast.  The first offspring of everything born was to be the lord’s.

Exodus 34:24

I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the LORD your God.

Moses was with God for forty days and nights without eating or drinking.

Exodus 33:12-23 Moses and the Glory of the LORD

Exodus 33:12-23 Moses and the Glory of the LORD

Moses asked the Lord to show him his way and also that he needed the Lord to go with them.  He also reminded God that the Isrealites were his people.  God told Moses he would go with him.

Exodus 33:15-16

Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

God reassured Moses that he would go with him and that the reason he was doing this was because he was pleased with him and that he knew Moses name.

Moses asked to see God’s glory.  God told him he could but Moses could not see God’s face because no one has seen his face and lived.

Exodus 33:21-23

Then the LORD said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

Exodus 33:7-11 The Tent of Meeting

Exodus 33:7-11 The Tent of Meeting

Read Exodus 33:7-11 here

Moses set up a tent outside of camp.  This tent for those that wanted to meet with the Lord.  When Moses would go out to the tent all of the Isrealites would stand at their tents and watch until Moses went into the tent.  When he was in the tent the pillar of cloud would come down and stay as Moses met with the Lord.  The people would worship when they saw this happen.

 Exodus 33:11

The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.

Exodus 32:1-33:6 - The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:1-33:6 - The Golden Calf

The Isrealites felt that Moses was gone too long so they convince Aaron to make them a god.  They gave up on Moses inturn giving up on God.

Aaron told them to have them bring all of their earrings they are wearing.  Aaron made them a golden calf from the earrings. And then they began to worship the golden calf.

Exodus 32:5-6

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD.” So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

When God saw this he told Moses to go down and because of what they have done.  God was angry because of what they had done.  God wanted to destroy them.  Moses pleaded with God to not destroy them.  Moses reminded the Lord of the promise he made with Abraham, Isaac and Israel.

Exodus 32:14

Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

Moses took the two tables that God himself wrote on them and went back down the mountain.  Moses and Joshua could hear the Israelites from far off.  When Moses saw what was happening he became angry and threw the table down and broke them.  He burnt the calf in a fire and then ground it to a powder, scattered in water and made them drink it.

Moses asked Aaron what the people did to make him do it.

Exodus 32:22-24

“Do not be angry, my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil. They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”

Love how he says he just threw the gold into the fire and the calf just came out.

Moses stood at the gate and said to the Israelites “ Whoever is for the Lord come to me”.  With this the Levites rallied to him.  Moses had them put swords at their side.  Then they were told to kill his brother, friend and neighbor.  Three thousand of the people died.  Moses told the people the sinned against the Lord.  He also told them he was going back up the make atonement to the Lord.

Moses did go back up the mountain and he for God to forgive the Isrealites and if God would not to instead blot Moses name out of his book.

Exodus 32:33-35

The LORD replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.”

And the LORD struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

God told Moses to go to the land that was promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  God told him he would send and angel before him to will drive out their enemies.  But God was not going to go with him because he would kill them.  And this worried the Isrealites because they know God would not be with them because he would kill them.

Exodus 31:12- 18 The Sabbath

 Exodus 31:12- 18 The Sabbath

Exodus 31:12-13

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.

They were to work for 6 days but on the seventh they were to rest.  Anyone who worked on that day was to be put to death.  It was a convent between them and God.  Just as God worked to create the world in 6 days and then on the seventh he rested so were the Isrealites to do.

Exodus 31:18

When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

 Exodus 30:34-38 Incense

Next God told Moses to take equal amounts of:

  1. Gum resin

  2. Onycha

  3. Galbanum

  4. Frankincense

He told them to make incense out of the spices. They were to grind some of it and put it in front of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting. This blend was not to be used other than in worship.

Exodus 30:37-38

Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the LORD. Whoever makes any like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from his people.”

Exodus 30:22-33 Anointing Oil

 Exodus 30:22-33 Anointing Oil

Next God gave Moses instruction on the Anointing Oil.  Moses was to get the following spices:

  1. 500 shekels of Myrrh

  2. 250 shekels of cinnamon

  3. 250 shekels of fragrant cane

  4. 500 shekels of cassia

  5. A hin of olive oil

These are the ingredients of the anointing oil.  Once they made the mixture they were use it to anoint the following:

  1. Tent of Meeting

  2. Ark of the Testimony

  3. The table and all its articles

  4. The lampstand and its accessories

  5. Altar of incense

  6. Altar of burnt offering and all of its utensils

  7. Basin with its stand.

  8. Aaron and his sons

Exodus 30:31-33

Say to the Israelites, ‘This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. Do not pour it on men’s bodies and do not make any oil with the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred. Whoever makes perfume like it and whoever puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from his people.’ ”

Exodus 30:17-21 Basin for Washing

 Exodus 30:17-21 Basin for Washing

Next God told Moses how to make the Basin for Washing.  They were to make a bronze basin also a bronze stand.  It was to be placed between the Tent of Meeting and the altar. This was to be filled with water.  Aaron and his sons were to use this to wash their hands and feet.

Exodus 30:20-21

Whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting an offering made to the LORD by fire, they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.”

Exodus 30:1-16 The Altar of Incense

Exodus 30:1-16 The Altar of Incense

God told Moses to build an acacia wood altar for burning incense.  It was to be 1 cubit long by 1 cubit wide by 2 cubits high.  There are to be horns that are overlaid with gold.  Again there is a specific way to care this item:

Exodus 30:4-5

Make two gold rings for the altar below the molding–two on opposite sides–to hold the poles used to carry it. Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.

It was to be placed in front of the curtain that is in front of the ark.  Aaron was to burn incense in the morning and again at night.  This altar was not to be used for anything except for burning of incense.  Once a year there was to be an atonement on the horns.  This is to be done by blood.

When there was a census of the Isrealites each person should pay a ransom for his life.  This would keep the plague from coming to them.  Each person was to give a half shekel.  This was to be done by all that are 20 years or older.

Exodus 30:15-16

The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives. Receive the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting. It will be a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD, making atonement for your lives.”
